Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) is a non-governmental organization established in 1958 that works closely with Kenya’s Ministry of Health to directly benefit over 500,000 children and persons with different abilities and their families annually. The Machakos Branch was set up in 2003 with a mission to strengthen rehabilitation services and mainstream disability for the empowerment of persons with different abilities.
The Machakos Branch provides a variety of services. Through its outreach programs, APDK-Machakos assesses persons with special needs, provides health education, and conducts measurements/fittings for supportive assistive products. Community-based rehabilitation activities include raising community awareness about disability issues and mainstreaming disability. APDK-Machakos provides assistive products, including wheelchairs and tricycles; occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and orthopedic technology services; and surgical interventions. APDK also supports the development of small-scale enterprises in the communities in which it operates. APDK embraces strong collaboration and networking with stakeholders and works with government ministries, faith-based organizations, community-based organizations, NGOs, and community members.
